What’s in a Name?

If it’s my name, it’s two Rs, folks, two Rs.

I don’t know why the name Deirdre is so hard for some folks to pronounce or spell, but apparently some people just can’t get it. I’ve had Deidre, Dedra, Didra and one imaginative soul who sent correspondence to Diidra Sazoy. Considering I was working for a huge company at the time, it was only dumb luck that this letter ended up on my desk at all.

As just me, I have always joked that I will answer to anything that starts with a D. That’s why I tell most people to call me Dee–saves on having to correct anyone.

But as an author, I appreciate having my name spelled correctly if folks opt to use it. I’m not talking about readers, though that would be nice, too. But places like Amazon? Yikes. I went hunting for my November book to see if it was up. As far as I knew it wasn’t until I searched for the title Body of Truth instead of my name. There it was under Deidre Savoy. It’s not like my name isn’t big as life right on the cover. Oy!

Talk about name problems. Mine is Deatri. Easy to say, but people always try to complicate it or change it.

What’s funny to me was when instructors in school would read it from the roll, I’d hear: Deatrice, Dominique, Dametris, De… aww forget it, King… ummmm Ms. King (my last name is King-Bey).

Though I love my name, I also go by Dee.

LOL, Deatri. Same experience. I used to tell people to pronounce my name as if they were writing a letter to someone named Druh. Dear Druh . . .

    Hi Deirdre:

I know that this blog is technically for romance writers, but I just wanted to drop a line. When I saw this posting, I knew I had to write. My name is Sherrie. Very simple to say and write, but you would be amazed at how many times I have to spell and pronounce it for people! I get called Sheree, Cherry (as in the fruit! What…How? Oh never mind, just correct it!) I’ve even had people ask me, “Well can I call you such and such, it’s easier.” My answer is always a gentle no (I don’t have a nickname).

Nice to know there are others out there with the same issues! BTW, love your books! Keep them coming!
